It’s not just about diet and exercise—many factors affect your ability to better manage your weight and enjoy better health. We carefully tailor the Menu for Change program to each individual, considering all aspects of your current health during three, one-hour “intake” visits with our core team of coaches. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you and your personal needs.
During the initial six-month Phase 1, you’ll have intense involvement with the core team, typically coming in every 1-2 weeks for one-on-one sessions to establish a foundation for building sustainable healthy habits. Phase 2 is another six months of active core team contact, often with fewer sessions and looser connections. Phase 3 starts at month 12 and continues as long as needed to help you continue your progress toward your weight and health goals and successfully maintain your weight loss. It’s easy to modify this schedule over time based on your specific needs.
The core team works together closely to provide you with optimal, comprehensive care. We’ll share information with you in a variety of ways, including one-on-one core sessions, group seminars and events, as well as handouts, articles, web references, apps, recipes and videos.
Menu for Change program offerings and “menu options” are quite robust, and participants can selectively build on the core sessions in numerous ways:
- Weekly or biweekly 1:1 sessions with Kira Baum, ND EAMP (core)
- Weekly or biweekly 1:1 sessions with Carrie Dennett, MPH, RDN (core)
- Quarterly 1:1 sessions with Susan Baumgaertel, MD (core)
- Monthly lectures presented by colleagues and program contributors to educate and stimulate discussion (see Events tab)
- Monthly support groups to address the psychosocial aspects of weight control
- Bimonthly walking groups at Discovery Park to reinforce the importance (and fun!) of exercise
- Monthly walking groups at Seward Park to get everyone outside and moving
- Monthly team-led grocery store “tours” at a variety of locations to help teach a multitude of topics with practical applications
- Weekly Motivational Mondays exercise classes—including tai chi qi gong, core & strength training, and yoga—to stave off the work week blahs
- Bimonthly book clubs to discuss innovative writings from interesting authors
- Bimonthly stress management workshops to teach key methods for reducing stress
As your personalized program unfolds, other resources are available to help you reach your goals. These additional “menu options” include referrals to acupuncturists, massage therapists, personal trainers, psychologists, meal delivery services, personal cooks, hypnotherapists, career coaches, wardrobe makeover coordinators. Other professionals are available for referrals such as cardiologists, sleep specialists, endocrinologists and plastic surgeons.
We’ll use several measures to help track your progress. These include weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, waist circumference, medication reduction, cholesterol, glucose control, and quality of life. Our emphasis is on helping you set long-term goals then continuously reviewing them and refining them at the program’s 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month “benchmark” points.
The Menu for Change program offers a template for health, wellness and sustainable weight loss for long-term success. Furthermore, we truly look forward to working with you!

Menu for Change approach
It’s not just all about diet and exercise! There are so many factors that affect a person’s ability to better manage their weight. We strive to look at all of these factors in this program.
During the initial 6 month phase, participants have intense involvement with the core team and explore menu options. The second phase is another six months of continued core team contact and menu option services, but with fewer sessions and looser connections. The third phase is one additional year which is considered the maintenance phase, and can be further extended for improved success.
